Daeth 2023 hen ddigon o lwyddiant i ni, ond hefyd heriau a newidiadau. Aethom ni mewn i’r flwyddyn mewn un ffordd a’i gadael mewn ffordd wahanol – mewn ffurf newydd o sefydliad, gobeithiwn, bydd yn cario ymlaen am flynyddoedd lawer, ac yn datrys yr heriau a wynebwyd y flwyddyn yma.

Ym mis Awst, fe gynhalion ni ein Cyngres flynyddol – dyma lle bu ni’n wynebu’r heriau i’n sefydliad eleni a newid ein ffordd o weithio yn sylfaenol. Y newyddion mwyaf yw ein bod yn camu i ffwrdd o drefnu o fewn Pennodau, ac yn awr yn trefnu o amgylch Prosiectau penodol. Yn y Gyngres hon y ymddiswyddodd Joe (a sefydlodd y mudiad) fel Cadeirydd y sefydliad. Sefydlodd Joe ‘Valleys Underground’ 5 mlynedd yn ôl, a gwnaeth y penderfyniad i ffurfio y ‘Welsh Underground Network’ 3 blynedd yn ôl – ni allwn ddiolch digon iddo am y gwaith caled a wnaeth i adeiladu’r mudiad hwn. 2023 marked successes for us, but also challenges and changes. We entered the year in one way and left it in a different way – in a new form of organisation which we hope will carry us forward for many years and resolve the challenges we faced.
Throughout the whole year, our members were active in their communities, we were repairing the community spaces that neoliberalism robbed from us and we were showing our communities that it’s only the communists who can restore what the capitalists destroyed.
As for specific highlights, in the beginning of the year, we were proud to be part of an anti-fascist movement to counter the allegedly “patriotic” alternative in their rally of Llantwit Major. Thanks to a local who tipped us off, we alerted many other organisations and raised the call for resistance. The hard work of many organisations resulted in 100s of anti-fascists arriving to drown out their miniscule presence. They left dejected, defeated, and only returned once in complete secrecy so as to not be embarrassed again.
Our members were involved in helping restore Clwb Y Bont, the famous Welsh pub in Pontypridd, and we went on to host some events there over the year. We hosted Colin Thomas, the producer of The Dragon Has Two Tongues (which you can watch here), to speak about putting Welsh history on TV and on his close friend and inspiration to us all, Gwyn Alf Williams. We also hosted a Republic Festival to challenge the coronation of Charles Windsor, we celebrated the radical history of Wales, and our Socialist-Republican roots.
In Swansea, we went on to run a ‘What Will A Socialist Republic of Wales Look Like?’ showcase during the All Under One Banner independence march in May. We ran this to challenge the liberal conception of independence, and to say that only socialist republicanism can truly liberate Wales and the working class of Wales.
Over the summer, we ran an online campaign highlighting the hypocrisy of our politicians and how they pretend to support LGBTQ+ rights when it’ll win them votes but can’t be bothered when it counts, when it comes to actually voting for legislation. We believe that liberal politicians only care about chasing the vote and keeping their cushy jobs – along with the even cushier jobs in consultancy, and other ‘careers’, they take along the side!
In August, we held our annual Congress – this is where we confronted the challenges to our organisation this year and fundamentally changed how we work. The biggest news is that we are stepping away from Chapter based organising, and are now organising around specific Projects. This new system should see all members engaged, no matter where they are, in the work that inspires them, and we should be able to replicate what works more easily.
It was at this Congress that Joe (who founded the movement) stepped down as the Chair of the organisation. Joe founded Valleys Underground 5 years ago, and the WUN grew from the Valleys as members across Wales got active – we cannot thank him enough for the work he put in to build up this movement. Our new Chair and General Secretary are eager to build on his legacy and move us forward.
From October onwards, every member of the Welsh Underground Network has been involved in Palestine solidarity protesting, campaigning and organising. We have been active within community groups, within our respective branches of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and we welcome the rebuilding of Stop The War Cymru.
We’re entering this year with the same attitude – we continue to fight for a free Palestine, from the river to the sea.
Coming up in April, friends and comrades of our organisation are in the courts in Wrexham for taking action against Elbit. We call on anyone who can to stand in solidarity with them, to show your support, and to show the rest of Wales that we will support anyone who takes action against genocide.
As for the rest of the year, you can expect to find us doing what we’ve done for the past 5 years, doing more of it, and keeping our growth going. This year will see us develop ourselves even more, with a renewed focus on our communities, with a renewed focus on our political development, and with the same steadfast focus on the creation of a Socialist Republic of Wales.
